The lead up to the trip was a little less than comfortable and definitely tested the nerves, because our soccer tickets barely made it to us with only 4 days to spare after ordering them last September! But here they are in our hot little hands:
Long haul flights are always a little painful (especially for me - JS) but we can't speak highly enough of Emirates - everything was top notch and as comfortable as cattle-class can be.
Highlight of the transit was a free in-flight performance from the Watershed Music Choir who were on their way from Zimbabwe to a tour of Argentina & Brazil. They joined us in Dubai and managed to keep a lid on things until we started the descent into Buenos Aires. The following video doesn't really do it justice but these guys were awesome....
Adding to the spectacle was the night view of BA as we came into land - massive, flat and very bright.
On arrival we found it a disadvantage that the only Spanish we knew is what JS learnt from Bad Boys, Breaking Bad and other drug-cartel related movies.
Who knew 'Hola' and 'Adios amigos' would not cut it??
Needless to say we had our feet on the ground about 8 minutes before our taxi driver was utterly confused as to what kind of morons we were.
Shortly thereafter, our hotel also thought us deranged and had to lend us some cash to pay the taxi driver.
Turns out the exchange rate here is 7:1 not 2:1 as we had thought, and so the amount we thought was a princely ATM withdrawal actually didn't even get us from the airport to our hotel.
Last-minute eBay purchase of a $6 Latin America Spanish Phrasebook came to the rescue at dinner.
We are a bit tired for the nightlife tonight, but easy to see that the folks here keep different hours - lots of people still coming in for dinner at 11pm and later.
Quick look around here tomorrow then off to Lima and then Cuzco for the trek to Machu Picchu.
Back to BA for a better look around after that.
Adios.....
